Ettiquette

When golfers talk about etiquette they are taking about do's and don'ts on the golf course. Some of it is common sense and some of it is things that you pick up as you play the game. It is their to help everyone enjoy their game on the course.
It includes the following:

Courtesy on the Course
  • Safety - Make sure no-one is standing near you as you swing the club.
  • Consideration for Other Players - No moving, talking or standing directly behind a player when a player is playing their shot.
  • Pace of Play - Playing without delay, calling players through and not holding up other groups behind you.

Priority on the Course
2 ball matches have priority over 3 ball matches, 3 ball matches have priority over 4 ball matches. Single players by themselves have no standing on the course.
Care of the Course
Holes in Bunkers - Smooth over all marks before leaving a bunker.
Repair Divots, Ball Marks and Damage by Spikes - Each player such repair any damage cause to the putting green before they finish the hole.
Damage to Greens - Flagsticks, Bags, etc. - Making sure no damage is done to the course whilst putting flagsticks or bags on the ground.
Golf Carts - Taking care when using buggies and trolleys, not taking the on to greens or tees.
Damage Through Practice Swings - Making sure no damage is done when taking practice swings.

All of these are fully explained in the Rules of Golf Book.
More things that you need to know when you start to play golf.
  • If at anytime you think your ball could hit someone else ALWAYS shout "FORE" as loud as you can!
  • When people are playing a shot try and stand so that your shadow is not interfering with the golfer who is playing.
  • When holding the flagstick ensure that your shadow is not cast over the hole or over the line of the players putt.
  • When holding the flagstick, hold the flag at the very top to stop the material flapping around in the wind.
  • When standing or walking near to the hole do not stand on the edge of the hole as this will cause damage to the edges of the hole.
  • Be careful when walking on the green and avoid causing damage to the putting surface with your spikes, if you do accidentally do cause a little damage be sure that you repair it.
  • Always help your playing partners look for their golf ball in the rough to help speed up the play.
  • Always try and keep up with the group in front, NOT just in front of the group behind.
  • Do not make too much noise, as this will upset other golfers on the course.
  • Always be polite and courteous to other golfers on the course.
  • If you are slower than other groups on the course, don't hold them up, please invite the group behind you to play through.
